2011 Russia celebrates a half century of manned spaceflight: On April12, 1961…
…Yuri Alexejevich Gagarin orbited as the first human around the earth in a spaceship. In honor of the pioneering flight of 'Vostok 1' this year sees many official ceremonies. Therefore the traditional Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre (GCTC) in Zvyozdny Gorodok (Star City) near Moscow has been polished up intensively: now it has become the perfect launch site for your spaceflight event.
GCTC offers unique hands-on adventures not to be found anywhere else in the world: For all operations regarding the work in and around spaceships and space stations, Star City has different life-size mock-ups for the training of functions and handling. So you will be made familiar with the spacecraft before you run the operations and procedures of a real space mission in the role of a cosmonaut.
In the TSF-18, the largest centrifuge in the world, you feel the forces acting on your body during rocket launch and re-entering of capsule. In the deep diving pool you will be introduced to the working conditions in weightlessness, and you learn how to work with tools in a special spacesuit and in a world without gravity.
Central component of the training routines is the 1:1 mock-up of the Soyuz capsule. Now that the space shuttle era is closed, this proven orbital transportation system is the only way to get access to the ISS. Here the use and maintenance of the capsule will be practiced; when you've have squeezed into one of the three seat shells, you get a vivid impression of what it might feel like to fly into space in such a capsule.
At lunch you meet an experienced Russian cosmonaut, one of those pioneers who made the conquest of space possible. He will give you some insights of how our world looks like from a distance of several hundred kilometers. Final highlight is the unique GCTC planetarium: nowhere else the stars can be displayed from a viewpoint outside earth, you'll look into the universe from the perspective of the astronauts.
During a small ceremony the participants receive official certificates from the hand of a GCTC representative for completion of the training modules. Later you celebrate with the coaching crew at a big Russian space dinner. We design your individual program according to your demands, the cosmonaut coaches of GCTC are looking forward to your visit!
